What Are You Still Holding On To?

It’s funny how we often crave something new while still clinging tightly to what should have been released long ago. We pray for fresh beginnings, yet our hands are too full of the past to receive them.

Before every festive season, it was the Rogers’ family tradition to do a thorough clean-up of the house. They would take out old clothes, dust the chairs, rearrange the living room, and ensure everywhere sparkled.

But here was little Chisom, clutching a pile of clothes her mother had removed from her wardrobe. She had outgrown most of them, but she wasn’t ready to let go. Her eyes brimmed with tears as she insisted she still loved them.

Her dad stepped in gently, lifting her into his arms. “Chisom dear,” he whispered, “those clothes are old, and they no longer fit you. You need to let them go for your wardrobe to have space for the new ones. Or don’t you want new clothes?”

That moment speaks beyond a child’s attachment — it speaks to us.

Many of us are like Chisom, holding on to the “old clothes” of our hearts, past mistakes, broken relationships, regrets, and disappointments. We keep them neatly folded in the corners of our minds, even when God is calling us into something new.

You cannot advance while still entangled in what should have been laid down. Every new season demands space, and sometimes, that space only comes when you release what weighs you down.

The fears, the guilt, the resentment — they have no room in your new beginning. The burdens you refuse to surrender will occupy the space meant for new blessings.

Dear one, clarity never comes in the midst of clutter.

Let go. Make room. Step forward.

Your freedom begins the moment you decide to release the old.
